Here's one last image from 2009. Towards the later part of the year, I haven't been able to update the blog. I'll try to attend to it much regularly. Also, I'll practise more to produce technically better and consistently creative photos in 2010. :)

Back to Quiapo (Late Post)

Mid this year, I returned to Quiapo with a conspicuous DSLR camera. (Earlier, I shot around Quiapo and Divisoria with a point-and-shoot. Click here for the entry.)

A few shots after taking out the camera, a sampaguita vendor acosted me, "Oi, Anong kinukunan mo?" ("Hey, what are you taking a shot of?")

I told her, "Ay, practise lang po. 'Wag kayong mag-alala 'di po kayo nasama." (Oh, it's just practise. No need to worry, you weren't included in the shot.")

Another asked her what I said. The vendor replied, "Ah estudyante. Project." (He's a student. It's for a project.)

I smiled.

*As told, the sampaguita vendor wasn't in any shot. That's a different vendor in the last photo.

I am borrowing another blogger's style of unravelling gifts through a series of photos. This is one of the best presents ever, so special that I was compelled to do such an entry.

I felt like Carrie with Aleksandr Petrovsky's ribboned giftbox. My hands (slightly) trembled as I pulled out the bow...

I knew what they were when I held one. But my excitement by no means didn't lessen.

Bunny! (I was hopping in my head. But truly, I was melting.)

Welcome to my Apartment

Repairs, refurbishing and redesigning my flat (well, the first floor) are finally done. Take a peek at my humble abode. (Image above: Light fixture from a worn out electric fan)

As previously posted (click here), the supposed theme is a fusion of industrial and colonial. I think I need a little bit more of industrial... But in any case I achieved my objectives, which include creating a very green home and spending less than the cost of my laptop.

Photo Wall. One of the first things one will see upon entering the apartment are these photos. They represent people close to me and signify important events. The sketch of myself was done by designer Kermit Tesoro when he sat in class.

Living Room. Elements in this room came from everywhere in Metro Manila. The trunk from a second-hand store in Kamuning, the chair from Our Home in North EDSA, the candy jar from a store in Chino Roces, ceramic pieces from Mayon... At the same time a lot of the pieces were DIY projects such as the trunk's base, the zebra print bench and the chrome lamp.

Dining Area. The Parson's table was one of the first DIY projects. It was deconstructed from an office desk. Its shelves were repurposed as side tables/ mini shelving. The drop light was crafted from taffeta ribbons and rattan rings as there is a dearth of source for shades.

The wall sculpture features photographs from my favorite photoblogger Noel Y. Calingasan and the branch from the tree the family needed to let go last new year's. And much like living trees, the sculpture intends to grow more postcards and photos and change every season...

The Kitchen. The kitchen was my least favorite part of the flat with its decrepit counter and sink until the renovation. Family and Friends would agree that the kitchen was the biggest transformation with a new counter and inclusion of an island in the space plan. The island was one of my father's old desks for his typewriters.

Staircase Landing. The last pieces to be included were the mirror and the ottoman at the staircase landing. The mirror's frame is made from aluminium can bottoms collected from the School of Fashion and the Arts while the ottoman is a reupholstered piece (see original here).

Finishing this project is majorly tedious yet one of the most self-actualizing things I've done. Heartfelt thanks to all those who helped and encouraged. :) Now, it's time to maintain, perhaps add some more detail and go on organize the second floor. A walk-in closet/ workroom sounds good...

A lot has happened...

...Since the last post. When I had time and planned to update, misfortune and opportunity came. Typhoon Ondoy delayed several of my activities including the preparations for my flat. I got flooded waist-deep.

When I woke up, the modem and router were already submerged and my camera Winter got soaked inside the bag. The ottomans were floating on ankle-deep water, which was fast-rising. Fortunately, the neighbors helped me bring up my sofa (which was the heaviest piece), and only the modem got damaged.

I only took a few shots of the flood (what's posted) and that's after securing everything. The newly painted walls bubbled and chipped. Some wood warped. But evrything else was OK. One good thing which came after the flood was finding this stool in a street corner near the grocery, where they were throwing stuff.

And after the flood, projects came and I started teaching at another school. A Foblow post got nominated in the blog awards (didn't win but it was a good experience). Also, I made time to review my undertakings and decided to streamline.

So the flood really was a turning point for me. I'm looking forward for brighter and happier days.

Apartment Preview

More of a teaser actually as I still want to keep the pieces, textures and other elements under wraps.

My closest and those who are connected with me via Facebook know that I've been obsessed fixing up my apartment. I've been doing so for various reasons ranging from the practical to personal.

The planned style is a fusion of industrial and colonial. I hope I achieve a decent interpretation of the look as everything is under a tight budget. So far, all costs (that includes major electrical repairs and reconstructions) are less than the price of my humble notebook. And as much as possible, efforts have to be green, i.e. eco-friendly.

A lot still has to be done. But I'm learning much and equally surprising myself.

Fotrait | Kimmy Dora

“Pwede ba mag girdle sa loob ng bathing suit?!” (Translation: “Can one wear a gridle inside a bathing suit?!”), commented a flabbergasted Eugene Domingo during the presscon of her first lead movie, Kimmy Dora: Kambal sa Kiyeme.

This was the reaction of the screen and theatre actress, and now “bagong reyna ng komedya” (T: “new queen of comedy”) to a question from one of the members of the media. Laughter stormed the room, and true to her comedic prowess, Eugene used the moment to further wet the crowd’s entertainment appetite.

Kimmy Dora is a comedy on twins with opposite personalities both played by Eugene. Their differing behaviors lead to side-spliting conflicts, switcheroos and whole lot of craziness.

In the movie, Eugene wears a swimsuit boldly asking leading man Dingdong Dantes, “You find me sexy, don’t you?” She also reveals that she had a kissing scene (shot three times for different angles) with Dingdong. When asked how it tasted (yes, the press can be very direct), she responded, “Parang lang Bear Brand Choco!” (T: “Just like Bear Brand Choco!”), the milk product she is endorsing.

When asked if she was more of a Kimmy or Dora, she tells that people think she’s more of Kimmy but she has bits of both. But as delightfully observed by the crowd, more of Kimmy came out when she delivered punchlines.

Kimmy Dora is Eugene’s first starring film after years of successful supporting roles. “...Hinog na ako. ‘Pag hindi pa ako gumawa ngayon baka mabulok na ako, ‘di ba?” (T: “...I’m already ripe. If I don’t make one now, I’ll end up rotten, right?”), she interjects with sense and humor. Eugene asks in the end, “Give me a chance... to show you what I can do.”

The presscon was held last Thursday August 13 at the function room of C&E Publishing in Quezon City.

Kimmy Dora, written by Chris Martinez, directed by Bb. Joyce Bernal and produced by Spring Films, opens on September 2.

For lunch today, I decided to head to the Mall of Asia. I was terribly hungry (It was around 3:00 PM.), saw Red Ribbon and decided to treat myself with one of their combos with a slice of cake.

Some force found a way of reminding me I'll be turning a year older in a few days.

I wasn't thrilled. The cookies and cream cake didn't turn things around...

And yes, people looked at me wondering why I was taking a picture of the cake.

Pairs of Photos

I think some of the best experiences come in pairs such as events that contrast and highlight each other, and perhaps those that complement each other creating a better story.

Here are more photos from the trip to the University of the Philippines Los Banos (previous post here). Set in pairs, these images show stark contrasts such as the living and the dead and heightened reactions such as creepy and creepier.

Encased and Released. At the lobby of UPLB's Museum of Natural History are three clear cases featuring live stick insects. The attendant suddenly opened one and got two out. To our surprise (except for the very brave Marty - in photo) we stepped away. Those are Marty's fingers inches away from the female (left) and male species.

Mythical and Dead. In front of the campus' library is this flying Tamaraw. In the museum are the skeletal remains of the real specie endemic to the Philppines. Wikipedia notes that the Tamaraw or the Mindoro Dwarf Buffalo is "critically endangered."

Foot and Head. Behind Marty is the ginormous foot of a Kapok tree. (He is still in the running to become Los Banos' Next Top Model.) Below is the skull of a sperm whale. (Somehow, my friends seem to be in a funeral...)

Green and Gay. I like this shot the most from our UPLB trip. It feels so peaceful. There is so much green in the campus. (Well, it's at the foot of Mount Makiling.) Too much green in fact that the museum's sign was covered by some shrubs and by a van. We got lost, leading to my favorite utterance from the trip, "Ano ba yan... Dapat pink yung font!" (Translation: "What the... The font should be in pink!") :P

I think a city is defined not just by its skyline but by its landscape, particularly the sculptures and specially shaped pieces that its people get to live with and not just see from a distance.

Here are some urban sculptures found in different areas of my city, Makati.

Reclining. I've seen this reclining man at King's Court building ever since I went to a nearby school for my elementary education. Only after photographing him a while ago did I get to observe his delicate pose and half-closed eyes. Amidst the busiest of districts, this man rests as an irony. Dela Rosa corner Chino Roces Avenue

Fu Lion. I've always found these guarding sculptures interesting mainly because of its details. These fu lions give a relieving contrast to all thats modern in the city. Little Tokyo, Chino Roces Avenue

55. After taking this nifty photo of the large steel address numeral of the School of Fashion and the Arts, I researched on the number and found out its "magic." It's a triangular number (sum of all integers from 1 to 10) as well as a pyramidal number (sum of all squares of integers from 1 to 5). Oh, and it's the year when Paul wrote the first letter to the Corinthians, including the very popular passage "Love is patient and kind..."

Figura #3. Currently, several of Arturo Luz sculptures are exhibited around Greenbelt and the Ayala Museum. His style has always been very modern and characterized by strong lines. His sculptures in yellow, red and black are a pleasant surprise as they are set in the mall's greens. Greenbelt Park, Ayala Center

Turuan. I recently just discovered this and it has easily become one of my favorite artworks. The sculpture of the ACCRA Law Office may appeal to some as very direct and boringly literal. But I think that's the beauty of it. Where else do you see sculptures boldly pointing at each other? My cheeky side wants to join in the pointing somehow. Store Guard. I got scolded for this one. I asked permission from an elderly guy standing outside the store, thinking he was the owner. He noded. Apparently, it was the guy in red. Binondo, Manila.

Last week while waiting for a meeting, this tabloid headline caught my attention. I wondered what the story behind "I Love My Rapist" was. As I should have expected... There really was no psychoanalysis in the article, i.e. how a victim could have fallen in love with the abuser. However to my surprise, the lead was so graphic, more precisely, pornographic. On a definitely more wholesome note, a friend and I watched Hannah Montana: The Movie last night. I remembered I took a shot of a back-to-school ad featuring Hannah Montana shoes weeks ago. Here it is.

"Plop"

If you think that jacket looks familiar, you probably might have seen it from the fashion week posting a few days ago. Fashion blogger Khaz bought it off the runway along with other beautiful things.

Combining the jacket with dark hues, pops of color and a Marc Jacobs Carter bag (not in photo - will leave it to his blog to detail his look), Khaz is indeed a fashion rebel.

The bag is one of Khaz's chic chick bags that make him stand out more from the crowd. But more than the feminine-masculine contrast in his looks, it’s his unapologetically happy outlook that defines his radical at the same time well-thought of ensembles.

What’s your favourite bag?
My favourite is my black Balenciaga work bag coz it's androgynous, and very functional.

What bag would you want added in your collection?
I like big bags, so a Hermes Croc HAC. No, wait, I take it back. I'll think muna.

Fashion Week Holiday 2009

Fashionable enough? Shoes I wore during a show

I wasn’t able to see much of fashion week this time. I went to a few shows as I was going around Metro Manila looking for furniture and home accessories. Nonetheless, here are some collections I saw during Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2009.

Inspired by Siem Reap. I was told by Beautiful Things blogger Khaz that designer Don Protasio works in Cambodia as a curator. It seems that the culture and style of Cambodia has inspired his collection.

Black Domination. There was a lot of black at least during the shows that I saw. So I guess it’ll be a black holiday season. Above are dark and dramatic designs of Anthony Ramirez and Veejay Floresca.

Sanya Smith in Jerome Lorico

Fashion is Ageless. Menswear showed a wide range, including fashion for the more mature clientele and the emerging fashion-forward market. Above are ensembles by Tonichi Nocom and Bang Pineda.

Geek Chic. One of the more colourful collections I saw was Odelon Simpao’s happy preppy designs. He added interest in the classic style approach through bright warm colors and unexpected details.

Chastity Trunks

Personal Pick. Now, these are wonderful. I wouldn’t know what to put in this bag but I want one. And the shoes! They’re just major. Designs by Jerome Lorico.

Oh my...

I've been wondering for quite sometime if I should.

For the past year, this blog has relied on an amazing point-and-shoot camera. But during the last month, I've been taking lessons on photography using a digital slr. And I've been wondering if I should integrate the shots taken using the new camera in this blog.

I am not sure why I am hesitant. There seems to be nothing wrong with it, right?

Perhaps, it's because it has been one of Foblow's strengths to try to capture good shots using a humble range finder. Also, it might also be due to the pressure of producing better images with a camera that offers more possibilities.

In any case, here's the first slr photo that I'm posting. A practise shot. In day when I coaxed almost everyone I saw at school to pose with the mannequin hands I found.

Crowning Moments

We made tiaras among other style-related crafts in the School of Fashion and the Art’s summer workshop for kids. One added a feather and a veil in hers and called herself an Arabian Nights Princess. Another had a carnival queen theme. But all of them were feeling the day as style divas and having their very own crowning moments.

And oh, the photo above? That’s lunch lady Jing helping us out and joining in the fun. (Notice the two girls’ royally bewildered reaction. :P)

I'm handling several of the classes in the summer workshop, which is until next week but there will be a free sample/demo at Fort Bonifacio on the 17th. Details to follow.

Lost in Fashion

We got lost in Fashion.

Last night, with a hundred designers presenting in one show, we couldn't keep up with whose fashion was whose in Metro Magazine's Metrowear 100. But we really didn't mind except for the bloggers' dilemma of captioning photos with the proper credits. I was sitting next to fashion blogger Khaz of Beautiful Things and a friend from the Inquirer.

The designers were grouped in segments (e.g., resort Wear by Cebu designers) with each presenting one ensemble.* So models came out as the designers' names were respectively flashed on the screens at the sides. It was just crazy looking center then forward then to the sides. And at times it seemed that models moved forward while the names didn't.

Anyhow, we still got delightfully lost in fashion. And I certainly found some favorites.

Robot Chic. This is my favorite look from everything that night. The frame butterfly sleeves were interesting enough. Then, the stylist covered the model's eyes and contrasted her light skin with very red lip color, building a strong android look.

Tess Pasola-ish and Givenchy Feel. This earth-tone dress reminds me of the paper sculptures of Tess Pasola. The silver dress with a large gathering at the back somehow evokes the drama and class of a Givenchy dress.

Jacket Du Jour. I personally like this jacket, but I don't think the wide, pointy shoulders will work with my wee frame. Perhaps, just the front and back details for me. :)

Metrowear 100, in celebration of Metro Magazine's twenty years, was held at the Manila Hotel Tent City.

Two hundred ninety one original photos, 69 entries, thousands of visitors from 63 countries and territories*, and one year of clicking! April 1 was Foblow’s “blog birthday” and here are all the best from the blog’s first year.

:: Best Sets

Neovandalism is one of the entries with a very well-gathered set of photos. The novel phenomenon of stickered graffiti in the metropolis was quite interesting, and hopefully the interesting feel was conveyed in the images.

Other must-see sets from the year are Reflectxing and Splashes of Light. The former is a play on reflection with a clear window, while the other a dose of neon lights from Manila’s clubbing district. I personally like them because, in a way, they tell stories (or at least stories can be made-up from them).

:: Most Viewed

Posts on sex and fashion were the most viewed entries in Foblow. On top of the list is the coverage on the Cosmo Bachelor Bash. Visits shot up when the two-part entry was published. And the most viewed photo in Flickr? Akihiro Sato pulling up his tank and surrounded by an eager audience.

But the top fashion entry of this blog? I think it’s the pre-launch look on Brian Tenorio’s farewell collection. It was a truly unique experience to get a glimpse of the shoe designer’s process and workshop (besides the translucent orange footwear).

Happy Shiny SoFA People

Last year, I started teaching illustration at the School of Fashion and the Arts (SoFA).

SoFA, located in Makati City, is a new and rising school for those who desire a career in fashion design and merchandising. It also draws together an interesting mix of people from ultra-stylish students who work their patterns in four-inch heels to the crazy creatives (and the plain crazy) to the very promising young girls who attend SoFA's summer workshops.

Though varied, SoFA houses some very happy shiny people.

School Voice
If you've called to inquire about the courses, you must have experienced his seemingly coffee-perked answer. Bryanne, though leaving in a few days, is the school's signature(?) voice.

Stella Got Style
One of the most promising students of this year's summer workshop, Stella has a penchant for pop and the 80's vibe. She made a tote bag that read "Hey! Stella" (complete with quirky smiley) and painted her nails in neon colors during the nail art classes.

Le Rosette Tote

Retaso or excess fabrics from production plants usually find their way to former landfill Payatas, and are made into rags by the women of this depressed community. Last night Rags II Riches, a project that aim to help the women of Payatas, unveiled the second designer collection of bags "upcycled" from these fabrics.

An exhibit was set up at The Gallery of Greenbelt 5, Makati City. Amina Aranaz-Alunan designed this summer collection defined by rosettes, stripes and nets. The pieces were fused with other indigenous materials-- a signature of Aranaz.

Exhibited along with the bags, newspaper ensembles were produced by Dong Omaga-Diaz, Jojie Lloren, Avel Bacudio and students of the School of Fashion & the Arts. Indeed a gorgeous piece was Lloren's (first photo). Upon closer inspection, one could even see a zipper integrated to the design. (I think it may even be wearable by a girl with a high level of finess.)

And the best bag for summer, especially if you plan to hit the beach in style, is this blue, white and orange striped tote (photo below). Feels nautical without being constricted to bold bands of blue and white. (The sandy hue of the mall flooring and the greens placed on the side just add to the beachy feel of the bag. )

Shiny Taro Balls

"What's that?" I asked my nieces. Under one of their beds is a jar with some sort of liquid.

"They're kisses," they told me with giggles. They took it out and revelead what they bought outside the school... Shiny, colorful taro balls. These came in small sachets and are marketed with such name.

"Have you tried eating some?" I asked. My neices told me no with a burst of laughter. So these really have no purpose but perhaps to delight much like kisses do.

We brought them out and took photos of the jar under the sun. I missed being a kid.

With an ounce of courage, I took photos of Quiapo and Divisoria for the first time. There were lots of scenes that owned uniqueness and strong images. Many of which I failed to capture because of fear of snatchers and the akwardness of hampering human traffic.

Manila, with its diversity of people is indeed filled with stories to tell. Here are the shots I managed to take.

Surprisingly, Divisoria's streets were empty. Still, I got concious. As I started clicking, people looked at me with agitation, as well as what I was aiming at.

And I got a photo of her, a small version of the Statue of Liberty on a decrepit building along Juan Luna street. Interestingly, she stood there all this time, side by side statues of Andres Bonifacio and Jose Rizal and another, which I failed to identify.

I know. Well... I guess I'll be back bolder and hopefully with better photos. :)

Timing and Placement

Last Tuesday, Julian Carlo Miguel Alcantara, a 10-year-old Ateneo Grade School student, was killed in a shocking vehicular accident on the school ground's parking lot. The photo above shows a follow-up story in the Inquirer and a Hi-Ace ad on top. Coincidentally, the vehicle that hit the boy was a Hi-Ace.

Talk about timing and ad positioning.

On a more serious note, this statement from the boy's dad, Fernando, struck me: "I just wanted to see the face of the person who took away someone so precious.”

Adds to the depth of the whole tragedy.

A year ago today, I got a point-and-shoot camera and called her Anna Winter. I've taken most of the shots in this blog with Winter. The exception is the three photos I used to introduce the blog. This little white box is named after the coldest of seasons, but ironically it has brought light to my eyes and warmth in my life.

I bring her with me everywhere and closest to my hand. And when I shoot, I raise her close to my heart. I know. Mushy. But this simple camera makes me happy. And that's a lot.

I love Brazil for throwing a mini carnival here in Makati for Valentine's day. Held at the Powerplant Mall's Rockwell Tent, O Amor Em Carnaval took me away from the usual scene of couples having dinner and places decorated with red hearts.

My friend told me that Pepper Lunch (restaurant at the mall) gave free dessert to dinning couples who would kiss. Then the crowd would clap. Eeeek. Graças a Deus. Adoro Brasil.

With or without Capoeira training, the crowd showed off their moves to samba and Brazilian funk. (I unfortunately missed the demo of Capoeira graduates earlier that day)

Giving color and setting the mood for the festivities were these fringed and feathered beauties.

Okonomiyaki Nights

Last year, my friend Mundi introduced me to okonomiyaki or what we call, "Japanese pizza." Okonomiyaki is a pan-friend batter cake filled with cabbage, pork, noodles (yakisoba), and optional ingredients such as squid, shrimp and cheese. She brought me to Kagura, a restaurant in Little Tokyo, where this sinful indulgence is served.

Escape from the City.
Little Tokyo, especially the its little-known courtyard, is a surprise in the middle of urban Makati. The place is set like a traditional Japanese garden. And since it's enclosed, it seems that you're far from the city. (Digressio: Note the food-floating-on-water poster in the photo.)

Like Butterflies

Served hot, the fish flakes on top move like slow butterlies. I know. It's a creepy visualization, but it is a definite delightful explosion of flavors. Okonomiyaki can also be served with fried egg and chicken skin. Can you say, Ohnomikolesterol?!

Okonomiyaki Baby

Mundi swears by it and would probably have illusions of gigantic Japanese pies (instead of an ice cream or a roasted chicken) in case she gets stranded on a deserted island. (Sorry, inside joke.)

Tiger, Pooh and Pinky

The chef is obviously a baseball fanatic, so you'll find toys and posters of the Hanshin Tigers. Oh, and there's this adorable dressed-up Pooh on the window and a pink paper mouse on the kitchen counter.

I went home for the holidays and took photos of flora and fauna. The house in Paranaque is always full of pets, and the walls lined with or covered by some plants. Here are some of the best shots.

Happy New Tree. When I arrived before new year's eve, half of the tree in front of the compound was chopped down. The type of tree often shed leaves, clogging the canal. It also grew high, reaching the electrical wires. Just yesterday, they replaced it with a smaller plant. I guess... New year, new tree.

Meet Majide. Besides a tree, the family has a new puppy, which the Anime-crazy kids named Majide. Finally, a family dog that doesn't bark at the sight of me.

Flora Fantastica. Stems of these flowering plants resembled a forest of sort. To the right is a super close-up of a Euphorbia blossom's swirling petals.

Neovandalism Two

These aren't really vandalisms but more of graffiti that can be considered as works of art (if not what can be regarded as a new form of vandalism). Whereas vandalism typically means destruction, these instead enlivened a seemingly abandoned property along N. Garcia Street in Makati City. (See previous entry on "Neovandalism.")

On the long stretch of wall are realistic renditions (such as the face above), abstract and naive art, presumably painted for a contest.

Graffiti to match the line of tricycles (Unsigned artworks)

In front of them mostly are houses-turned-showrooms in white and earth tones. If not for these graffiti and the bright line of orange tricycles on the adjacent street, the block would have been just bland.

Sensational squiggles (Artwork by Caneza)

This particular work caught my eye. I'd buy this segment of the wall If I was rich. I just find it remarkable-- Reminiscent of Keith Haring's works, but of course with the artist's unique point of view and style. I'm not certain what it means. I think it's about gossip, i.e., the wriggling of stories from one storyteller to another.

It's no top model. It's designer and School of Fashion and the Arts student Kermit Tesoro. Even in a semi-sober state, Kermit can rock these heels he designed himself.

Yes, he can also contort, do karaoke and even jump in these pumps... without falling.

Urban Bazaar Weekend

I spent last weekend at the Urban Bazaar (Rockwell Tent beside Powerplant Mall). The tiangge showcased a well-selected array of offerings from discounted designer sneakers to very gay and glittery one-of-a-kind decor. Here are some finds from the four-day event.

If you thought the bright neon trees from Dimensione were flambouyant enough, wait till you become the talk of the town with these long-legged christmas trees. These delightfuly crazy crafts were among the interesting designs by Talk of the Town (http://tottgiftshoppe.multiply.com/).

Definitely one of the bestsellers of the bazaar were the rosey and feathery headbands from Amour-- a classic clothing line designed for romance (http://amourmanila.multiply.com/). These hat-like headbands are designed and made by Cheena (left) and Ron. (That's Kato of Moonshine to the right.) Each piece is one of a kind and certainly an attention-grabber with its girlish flair.

Nearby was this birthday cake hat from Ikea. Ikea's pile of soft, cute finds also had furry animal puppets and a fruit basket hat.

Outside the bazaar and inside the mall were these unique reindeers-- one seemingly with an underwear fetish and another made from a used plastic bottle. Snaps to Details for using recycled items for their store display.

Back to the bazaar... I found out that TV host Sam Oh is now also a designer and entrepreneur. With a couple of partners, she set up a line of kickass infantwear called The Urban Baby (http://www.theurbanbabyonline.com/). They had designs with pirate skulls, wings and even pig tails. Urban Baby even had flag-inspired bodysuit that resembled a gymnast's outfit. Cool.

Of course, I was there for four whole days for this business project of mine-- Nation (http://nationtm.multiply.com/). Part of the selling block of the School of Fashion and the Arts, I showcased some shirt designs inspired by pop art and the tartan trend.

The Urban Bazaar will once again be held from December 12 to 14.

This is the first time I post images that are really manipulated, not just laid out with text and some vectors for a magazine-like look.

Last night, I overlapped duplicates of an image, a wavy light fixture, which I took at a restaurant. I was aiming to create something like a flower. However, it appeared to be an abstract painting reminiscent of some Filipino cubist works. Then I tried out this kaleidoscope treatment on some other object shots...

Perhaps, this will be rare since Foblow is not really a graphic design blog. But do tell me what you think. :)

Rhino-like grid headpiece by Kermit Tesoro

It's Philippine Fashion Week again. I wasn't able to attend as much shows as I did during last season. Still, I was lucky enough to see imaginative and refreshing collections. In general, a lot of collections were hits rather than misses (i.e., those with pieces not apt for the season). Here are a few photo highlights.

Cotton Candy Whimsy. Youthful designs and new shapes from Kenneth Chua.

Personal Pick. Cuffed shorts by Pier Lim.

Little Cute Dress. Philip Tampus opens the Project Runway final show with a color muted but highly detailed collection. One of the crowd favorites was this baby dress.

Unzip to Transform
This convertible ensemble may very well make Aries Lagat win Project Runway. But we have yet to see as Philip gave quite an elegant show.

Goldfishes and Jellyfishes

I am not sure if these are the inspirations for their collections. Nikko Sonico's had fin-like ruffles and a goldfish palette, while Regine Dulay's pieces and parasols evoked images of graceful jellyfishes. Much like jellies, they were extra exquisite when they were hit by the light.

Fashion Week runs until October 29 (Wednesday) at the SMX Convention Center and SM Mall of Asia.

Days ago, I needed to renew my passport. There were lines and waiting time for every station at the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). It took up half my day, but it felt quicker. Thank God I had my camera with me. Here are some shots...

Peaceful Wait

The wait was bearable and a welcome calm compared to the chaos and harrasment one will get from fixers outside the department premises. They would callously talk to you and, yes, even touch you.

Alien Ship

The DFA's auditorium ceiling resembled what could be an alien ship with its center ready to beam us up. At the auditorium, they set up stations for the final stage of passport application.

It was ok in general. I was able to keep myself preoccupied, but it's through an agency or a courier service next time. :)

Every Mondays, Mag:net Cafe enables the bold and unsigned to live their rockstar fantasies not with a videoke system but with a live band. Last Monday, Advertising Copywriter Carl Celemente aka Supercharlie became the first ever Rockeoke Idol.

Singing Green Day's "Basketcase" and U2's "All I Want is You," Carl was judged the ultimate with his undoubtable passion and panache. He believes he really can't sing, but Rockeoke makes him forget that. And after a hard day's work, belting it out gives him the much needed release and reprieve.

Well as they say, party like a rockstar...

It's perhaps the new mode in vandalism-- Mass produced stickers. Spray paint and markers are still there. But recently, vandals have been stickering the street signs of Metro Manila with these photocopied graffiti.

Could it be the cheaper cost? Or the convenience of vandalizing as quick as a tap? In any case, I find it interesting that the vandals have made signages talk and even stick out a tongue. These are of course eyesores, and obviously the vandals are uber bored, making the streets their personal scrapbook.

This is the first time I took photos to blog at the Cosmo Bachelor Bash-- Summit Publishing's hunkfest for the fun, fearless female (and fabulous men). I noticed that everyone was throwing their hands in the air as if reaching for something.

And oh, the picture above... Just an interesting detail from the next one. It's a dancer raising (and swaying) his arms as well. And what were you thinking?

Eli of Project Runway Philippines

Fotrait is a new entry category here in Foblow, capturing portraits of people with stories to tell (and in this case cannot tell).

Eli Gonzales is mum about details of Project Runway Philippines, the reality TV show in which he is one of the 14 finalists. So we talked about him as a designer as we took photos around Greenbelt 5.

Eli has been in retail fashion design for quite sometime, having worked with brands such as Lee, Lulu Castagnette, Plains & Prints, Sari-sari and My Barong. This young and outgoing designer especially admires Filipino-named brands and cannot imagine leaving the country for a permanent or long term basis. In fact, he believes in being a "fresh, fun-loving and Filipino" designer.

"For me, it's a great compliment to know that people are still wearing my designs even if they're already three years old!" tells Eli. His works have been consistently feminine and wearable with a delightfully unexpected detail or interpretation of a particular inspiration. When asked what a woman should feel when wearing a design of his, with spunk he answered, "fashion orgasm."

Now, that's something to talk about. :)

Word around is that Eli made the show bigger than reality, sure enough to rake in ratings. Will he win Project Runway? Will he win the hearts of Filipino viewers (and buyers) and be a runaway success?

I was fortunate enough to visit the studio of illustrator and visual artist AJ Omandac. I have been a fan ever since I saw his colorful and filigree rich painting exhibit several years ago.

It was interesting to find several lucky charms in his studio that were painted in matte black-- a striking contrast to the fantastical appeal of his artworks.

Stone-like Sophistication
There's a lot of polyresin buddha statues being sold right now such as these, but in pink, lime green and other bright hues. These look so sophisticated in black. Like they're made of stone.

It's Philippine Fashion Week-- Nine days of spectacular style for the season from Filipino designers! I stood right next to the press box to get the best view and to take good snaps. (It was a bit funny. I think I was the only one holding up a point-and-shoot. :D)

An hour in Antipolo

Last week was my friend Martin's birthday. Every year, he would visit the Antipolo Cathedral as a "panata" or devotion. Coincidentally, it was also the feast of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage/ Virgin of Antipolo.

Too bad it was a Saturday. I think they save the parade and all on Sunday. Nonetheless, there were lots of "suman" (rice cake wrapped in banana/ palm leaf), cashew nuts and a tiangge of trinkets. After the mass, we took a short stop at the plaza for snacks, "pasalubong" (gifts for friends and family back home) and some snaps.

At a nearby mall, plastic (fiberglass?) sculptures of strange creatures are installed in its Art Center. One of my favorite artists, Ronald Ventura, once more fuses his impeccable realistic technique with eerie and undeniably thought-provoking concepts.

Ventura's exhibit "Zoomanities" features quite a number of figures that are part human, part beast and some part technology. One installation features 75 sculptures layered in a clear casing, i.e. 15 pieces holding up the next layer with an acrylic sheet.

The installation that caught my attention is this reinterpretation of Anthony Gromley's Angel of the North. The falling angel with his head on the clouds... Simply amazing. Bravo.

The painting and sculpture installation exhibit runs until May 20 at SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City.

From this angle it looks like a surreal landscape of clay-like desert mounds. It's actually a swirl-shaped cement sitting area by the bay.*

A little change in perspective can paint a completely different picture.

Afterthought: How I wish I had someone with me and have him hide in the middle of the swirl with an arm (or leg) popping out. :P

Vogue!

Whenever I pass by Lawton, I would not miss the chance to glance up at the gorgeous sculptures lining the facade of the Metropolitan Theater.

This afternoon however, I decided to stop by and take some snaps of these art deco beauties created by Italian sculptor Francesco Riccardo Monti. These ladies with arms raised, fingers arched and an attitude seem like they're voguing, i.e. striking a high fashion pose. Despite some signs of erosion, their commanding form and draped capes make them simply magnificent. (In fact, it has been a dream of mine to have a fashion shoot with models posing side by side with them.)

Fierce
I wasn't satisfied though by the angles that I had. I wanted to take a closer, eye-level shot. So I decided to go up the flyover near the theater, which doesn't have a pedestrian walkway just a foot-wide elevation to the side. :O

I stood on the elevation near the railing that rose up just above my knee, with speeding buses and jeepneys inches behind me. It was an adrenalin rush standing at the flyover's peak and maintaining balance. After a while, I realized my knees where slightly shaking. Still, I kept on clicking.

The Drama!

With mannequins seemingly squinting towards a horizon, absolute black granite finishing and well-though-of warm lighting, the Jun Escario shop has one of the most elegant store interiors in the latest segment of the Greenbelt mall.*

While waiting for some friends pick some dresses, I took some photos through the shop's mirrors and glossy walls. And the results were just dramatic.

* Greenbelt 5 is an upscale mall in Makati City housing several of the Philippine's top designers.

At the end of the Manila Ocean Park is a shoutout wall (made of tarpaulin) wherein anyone can share their sentiments or simply announce that they were there.

One wrote, "Save the ocean. Eat pork. Not Fish." Another wrote with disappointment, "Wala si Spongebob." (Spongebob's not here.) :)

Nonetheless, among all scribbles this was the standout...

Translation: "Why isn't there a mermaid?"

Date with the Deep

After several days of feeling down, I decided to go out of my shell and have a date with majestic and colorful creatures aside from the already spectacular Marty and Tope. :) The destination: Manila Ocean Park. The date: fishes, mantarays and sharks.

As they say, aquariums are soothing. The Oceanarium calmed me from my major anxieties with its large tanks of gentle moving water and smooth swimming creatures.

It was also an opportunity to take nice new photos, as well as catch fresh color and print inspirations. It was quite a stimulating experience... Even though my dates were silent all throughout.

Last month on my way to school, I saw this lady outside a building three stories high, sitting on a monobloc chair and typing on her macbook. I whipped out my cam and started shooting before the lights turned green.

Any thoughts why she was up there? Was it that crowded inside?

What if an earthquake struck? :P

I'm now here at Blogger!

I moved from Livejournal for several reasons such as my preference for Blogger's layout and my use of Picasa.

I am Lawrence Antaran and this is my photoblog. You'll find here interesting urban scenes and objects, and perhaps things that will be able to lead to bright ideas. The images you'll see are mostly of the city I've lived in for 27 years. (Gosh, I've been living in Makati* for 27 solid years!) Of course, I'll post other photos especially those brought about by some experimentation with the camera.

I love taking photos and, even more, taking photos that tell stories. However, I'm not a professional and I'm not using an SLR yet. I think I'm still not ready. For now, I'm enjoying my point-and-shoot and I am practising some basics such as composition, lighting...
